How to Open and Stir a Can of Metal Paint

Want to minimise mess, keep your paint fresh and achieve professional results on your next decorating project? Our guide teaches you how to open a paint container and the best way to stir paint. Follow these guidelines to get the best finish on your paintwork and prolong the life of your paint, whether you’re applying standard liquid paint like Hammerite Ultima or primers and rust treatments.

The best way to open a paint can

Wondering how to open a paint can? All you need is a flat-head screwdriver! Place the metal paint can on an even surface and wedge the screwdriver between the lid and the lip of the can. A gentle push on the screwdriver’s handle should lift the lid easily. When opening the can, be careful not to damage the closing ring or lid so you can seal the can after painting.

How long does paint last once opened?

Now that you know how to open a tin of paint, it’s important to seal and store it correctly after use to extend its shelf life. When properly sealed, a can of paint can last for up to 2 years. Make sure you clean any excess paint around the rim and replace the lid tightly. Explore our guide to find out how to clean paint from brushes and other surfaces using Hammerite Brush Cleaner and Thinner.

How to stir paint

Do you have to stir paint before use? Yes – it’s an essential step to take before painting to achieve the best results on your paintwork, and it’s quick and easy to do. When the paint looks smooth and there’s no separation, it’s good to go. Simply remove the stirrer from the paint can and scrape it on the can’s inner edge. Watch out for drips!

What to stir paint with?

We recommend using a paint stirring stick to mix the paint gently. The stick should be long enough to reach the bottom of the can, ensuring the best mix.

How often to stir paint

So, do you have to stir paint before use? We recommend mixing your paint every time you open it, as separation can occur when it is stored. You should also stir it every so often while painting to maintain the colour and consistency.
