How to Paint Metal Garden Furniture

Ready to refresh your outdoor space for summer? If you have metal garden furniture, a lick of paint is all it needs to look brand new! Discover our top tips for painting garden furniture in our guide, whether you’re painting rusty garden furniture or repainting metal garden furniture in a different colour.

What you'll need

Before painting outdoor metal furniture, you’ll need to remove any old paint, treat rust, sand it, and clean the surface. Our step-by-step guide explains how to prepare metal surfaces for painting to ensure the best results. Once you’re ready to paint, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Dust sheets. Even if you’re working outdoors, it’s best to place dust sheets underneath your furniture while painting to protect your patio, decking or lawn from paint splashes.
  • PPE. When painting metal, ensure you wear the correct PPE. This includes overalls, gloves, goggles and face masks.
  • Paint brushes. We recommend having various sizes on hand to cover all areas of your garden furniture, including hard-to-reach corners, intricate details, and larger surfaces. However, if you’re using aerosol metal paint, you won’t need any brushes.
  • Exterior metal paint. We have several exterior metal paints suitable for garden furniture, from aerosols to standard liquid paints in several shades and finishes.

Tips for painting metal furniture

Looking for the best way to paint metal garden furniture? Discover our top tips below to achieve a professional finish:

  1. Check the weather. You’ll need a guaranteed dry day to paint metal garden furniture, as even the lightest shower can spoil your new paintwork before it dries completely.
  2. Prep the surface. Even if you’re using a direct to rust or direct to metal paint, we recommend lightly sanding the surface to improve adhesion. Then, wipe it clean to remove any debris before painting.
  3. Apply two coats. Although one coat of metal paint may be enough to achieve the desired opacity and colour, two coats will improve the longevity and durability of your paintwork.
  4. Leave to dry thoroughly. Hammerite exterior metal paints are fast-drying (2-4 hours), but you should always leave the paint to dry for as long as possible before using your garden furniture.
